Tanzania's First Mobile Surgical Unit Launched in Dar es Salaam, Opening a New Chapter in Community Healthcare

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – May 20, 2026 – Today, Tanzania's first-ever mobile surgical unit was officially launched at Muhimbili National Hospital, marking a major breakthrough in healthcare service delivery for remote communities and effectively addressing the long-standing challenges of limited access to surgery and distant medical facilities.

Manufactured by Guangtai Medical, this modern mobile surgical unit is fully equipped with medical facilities comparable to a standard hospital operating room. The launch ceremony was attended by Tanzania's Deputy Minister of Health, Florence Samizi, Muhimbili National Hospital Director Delilah Kimambo, and medical experts from both China and Tanzania.

Addressing Local Needs and Relieving Healthcare Pressure

Deputy Minister of Health Florence Samizi highly praised the initiative during her speech. She noted that many Tanzanians face delayed treatment due to high transportation costs, long travel distances to hospitals, and a shortage of specialized doctors. The mobile surgical unit will serve as a "hospital on wheels," bringing timely medical screenings and surgical services directly to remote communities, significantly improving the fairness and accessibility of healthcare.

Director Delilah Kimambo added that the unit is capable of performing emergency surgeries and remote specialist consultations, while also helping to reduce the burden on referral hospitals and improve overall healthcare efficiency.

First Successful Surgery Demonstrates Technical Excellence

On the day of its launch, a joint medical team composed of Chinese and Tanzanian doctors, along with experts from Fuwai Hospital, successfully completed the first surgery inside the Guangtai mobile surgical unit, utilizing advanced anesthesia machines, monitors, and surgical lighting systems.

Lead surgeon Dr. Frank Muhamba spoke highly of the unit's performance: "This mobile unit has everything a standard operating room requires. Guangtai Medical's design in terms of sound insulation, power stability, and equipment integration is excellent. This proves that it is fully capable of delivering high-quality medical services in a wide range of environments."
